Project Overview
The only major retail initiative to launch in the UK in 2016, Victoria Gate is the £165 million shopping and leisure destination that has propelled Leeds to the UK’s third best place to shop*
Located adjacent to Leeds luxury shopping destination, Victoria Quarter arcade, the two now form part of the new 53,400 square meter Victoria Leeds shopping district. Victoria Gate is the largest premium retail and leisure venue in Northern England, anchored by a flagship John Lewis store, which happens to be the first in Leeds as well as the largest outside of London.
It is also an astonishing architectural statement building that Met Consultancy Group is proud to have been associated with since its very earliest inception.
Technical overview
Met were commissioned from 2005 onwards to provide a series of surveys of the main areas planned for redevelopment. Met conducted topographical surveys around Eastgate, Vicar Lane, Briggate and George Street including the old Millgarth Police Building. These surveys informed the basis for the design of the scheme and for its context in terms of the planning application.
As the plans developed, Met were asked to provide further data on the areas in and around the Victoria Arcade. Our team of experienced laser scan surveyors conducted measured building surveys for associated buildings and arcades which had been planned as integral parts of the final scheme design. Street scene elevations were also required to give context to new build options.
Met were a consistent point of call for our client throughout the project, and continually worked on aspects affected or integral to the scheme until its launch. Despite the familiar challenges faced when working in busy town centres with disruptive pedestrian and traffic flows, all work was completed on time and budget.
